How film director Sanjay Tripathy created a niche for himself in a fast-changing industry

Over the last couple of decades, the most important question for the artists has been about staying relevant in an evolving entertainment industry. It won’t be an exaggeration to say that keeping pace with a changing paradigm has put a question mark on the relevancy of various artists and things they do.

However, at this juncture, many veteran artists have gone about their business behind the limelight but at the center of things. Sanjay Tripathy is one such individual, who has stayed afloat as a writer, director and producer throughout the course of his journey by adapting to the contemporary demands and nature of the industry.

The versatile individual started his career right after completing BSc. Physics Hons from University of Delhi. He joined India today group magazine “Computers Today” as a science writer in 1994. Sanjay understood the need of the hour and decided to switch to Television medium in 1996. He went on to produce & direct special news features on science, art and culture for Doordarshan prime time news.

A couple of years down the line, he launched his production banner Pulse Media Pvt Ltd. in the year 1998. Tripathy produced and directed India’s most celebrated science show “Turning Point” for the National Television. He kept on enhancing his portfolio and his work started getting recognition. A few years later, he produced and directed 3 shows for Zee TV’s edutainment venture Zed Tv.

In the year 2006, he decided to join International Tv channels and created top rated shows like ‘Healing Touch’ and ‘Golden Temple- Revealed’ for Discovery Channel. He also created ‘Womb of the World’, ‘India’s Mega Kitchens’ and ‘Inside: Tirumala Tirupati’ for National Geographic channel. He is the man behind ‘The Wedding Business’ & various other shows for various International channels like Al-Jazeera (English), Network 10 Australia, etc.

Sanjay Tripathi’s work credentials kept increasing multifold as he kept coming up with award-winning and historic shows. Subsequently, he wrote & directed 52 episodes for one of the most critically and commercially successful series HUM, the first daily soap of India aired on Doordarshan National Network.

Tripathy’s ability to wear many hats and switch them at any point in time made him flexible with regards to the work he did. In 2013-14, he wrote & directed his first Feature film CLUB 60. This critically acclaimed film completed 150 days of run in a Mumbai theater and went on to receive many nominations in various award shows besides winning the popular screen award for Best Ensemble Cast and Best Actress in drama category. It is one of the most watched films on Star Gold.

In 2015, the maverick artist wrote and created a highly acclaimed medical drama “Ek Nayee Umeed- Roshni” for Star Tv. He also directed a short feature film “Mann Bairagi” on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s teenage life. The movie was produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

From 2016 till present, he has been creating, writing and directing various features. He is currently writing Vishwanathan Anand’s biopic for Netflix.

His upcoming projects include Hindi film “Binny & Family” to be released worldwide in August 2024.
